AREAi’s ESDForum shifts focus; begins breeding of young innovators for the SDGS

AREAi’s Education For Sustainable Development (ESD) Forum since inception has created open spaces among school children to discuss,share and understand contemporary issues surronding Sustainable Development using an unconventional approach beyond the coventional classroom learning. With this,we aspire that Education is channeled for the full development of humanly personality and capacity of our target audience (learners ).

Also,this is ensure that in the spirit of global citizenship, in which our primary identity is that of human beings, all people, regardless of circumstances, “should have access to life-long learning opportunities that help them acquire the knowledge and skills needed to exploit opportunities and to participate fully in society.

With key focus on Peace, Global Citizenship and Climate Change in the past,our latest edition was centered around creating awareness about the Sustainable Development Goals and the role of young people in its implementation. This edition for the moth held of September 2016 was held at Airforce Comprehensive School Iyana-Offa in Oyo State.

Our Executive Director Prince Olanrewaju Gideon Seun spent quality time discussing the significance of youth~driven innovations for SDGs with over 150 young students. Speaking in line with the Gyeongju Action Plan recently adopted at the UNDPI NGO Conference in South Korea which AREAi participated in, he stressed that the ESD Forum was designed in order to explore creative means by which education for global citizenship can be integrated into curricula and the agenda for education including developing actions and activities towards promoting the SDGs. While intimidating the students on Global Goals,its objectives and targets under each goal,the students were made to understand  how each goal connects with their immediate environments and how they can play active roles in its pursuance.
The crucial importance of Sustainable Development Goal 4: “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong opportunities for all; was brought to the fore to accommodate the creative energies of the students. In the usual ESD Style,17 different groups were formed to brainstorm on each of the SDGs. At the end,each group made a presentation to sum up the outcomes of their deliberations.

Ideas on how local solutions can help solve identified challenges in their communities were presented,one from each group representing each goal of the SDGs. In furtherance of this,the students will be mentored over the course of the next few months to concretize their solutions towards promoting sustainability.

With ESDForum,we are promoting educational skills for social entrepreneurship and building a world where everyone will benefit from education while developing skills,knowledge, values and attitudes to contribute actively to societal development.
